The Sentry by Robert Crais

Published by Orion Books, March 2011. ISBN: 978-1-4091-1600-4

Joe Pike stopped at a Mobil station for air. If he hadn’t needed air he wouldn’t have seen the two men who he knew were about to commit a crime the moment he set eyes on them. The crime is hitting a takeout sandwich place, and when Joe witnesses them beating the owner, he wades in.  But the owner  and his niece, refugees who have relocated after Hurricane Katrina, don’t want the cops involved, but Joe is attracted to the niece Dru Rayne, and offers his protection whether they want it or not.

To Joe it appears to be a simple matter - the two guys have the tattoos of a local gang and Joe uses his connections to get them warned off.  But the violence escalates to an alarming degree, and investigation by Elvis Cole throw up conflicting information to that given to Joe by Dru Rayne.  Just who are Dru Rayne and her Uncle Wilson?

The simple matter of reporting a beating to the police brings to light an investigation by the FBI.  But that is the least of Joe’s problems, as it appears that a contract assassin is seeking them, and Joe is in the way.

This is the first Elvis Cole and Joe Pike novel I have read but it won’t be my last. The pace is fast with many twists and turns along the way. Highly recommended.
